English
The focus of language arts at EXCEL Academy of Texas targets three specific areas:
The ability to combine creativity, critical thinking and formal research with the writing process to create effective written expression of ideas. This is done on all levels, especially targeting the juniors and seniors who write an extensive research paper.
The knowledge of English grammar, which is essential to good writing. The essentials of proper usage and its application are key in our language arts program.
The application of the knowledge of writing and grammar to develop good test-taking skills. Our students take all the available standardized tests.
a. 10th graders - PLAN (preparation ACT)
b. 11th graders - PSAT (preparation for SAT). ACT, and SAT (Twice)
c. 12th graders - ACT, SAT (Two or three times)
We also focus on developing vocabulary, analogical skills, and enthusiasm for reading. Our goal is to excite the student about the rewards of good and effective communication. All instructors in all departments are encouraged to help their students develop and use good writing skills in all the work they do for that class.
Mathematics
The focus of all the math classes is what the students need to know for the future. There is very little time spent studying concepts that are not required in higher math courses. Much of the material that is covered in the courses from Pre-Algebra to Algebra II is review over basics and reinforcement of previous concepts. Because most students have gaps in their mathematical education various reasons, our philosophy is not to proceed until the material is sufficiently understood. Extra work and tutors are provided as needed, and review over accumulated material is frequent.
Science
Physical Science (Integrated Physics and Chemistry) - Physical Science is designed to give students a general understanding of science. Students learn basic chemistry concepts, such as the makeup of atoms, simple chemical equations, elements (including an introduction to the Periodic Table), compounds, and reactions. Students gain a working knowledge of basic physics, such as explanations of the universe, motion, energy, electricity, and gravity. The course is designed to prepare students for biology, Chemistry and Physics.
